MARCH 07
Northwest Counties ABA - Royal Naval Junior Championships 2007
31st March 07 Bridgefoot Police ABC had 3 boxers in the finals Michael Williams was up against Kieron Farrell Broadshaw ABC, in the 46-48kg class 5 section.
This was a really good contest from the first bell; Farrell is a very strong fighter who pushed Williams right to the end of the contest. Williams was not fazed by Farrell, he worked equally as hard, catching Farrell with some really good body and head shots. I thought this was an excellent contest, but the scoring was pathetic, don't get me wrong Farrell won the contest, but I was less than impressed with how a lot of the bouts were scored. Hard look Michael excellent contest, so let's keep up the hard work!!
Tom Spicer was up next against Jack Arnfield Poole of Life ABC. This bout was a class 6 contest, which means the contest is 4 rounds. The first round was close with both boys throwing some good shots. The score for this round came in at Arnfield 5, Spicer 2. In the second round Spicer took a standing count, 30 seconds later so did Arnfield. In the third round the fight was stopped in favour of Arnfield. Again no doubting Arnfield won the bout, but the scoring left a lot to be desired. Tom gave Arnfield a standing count in round 2 also knocked his head back a fair bit, but only managed to score 1 point. Whats that about?
Lee Ward was up against an old foe Terry Flanagan Northside ABC. Terry is an excellent boxer who always gives 100%; he also beat Lee just before Christmas in the YCP championships. This time Lee was ready for it, boxing a totally different fight, it was like a game of chess with both boxers waiting for the chance to throw a shot that would pick up points. This contest was extremely close, especially after Lee picked up a public warning, in the last round for going low. This warning could have lost Lee the bout, but he went through 9 points to 7. Nice one Lee!!
The next round for Lee was scheduled at York Hall, Bethnal, London on Friday 13th April. Lee got a bye in this round so will now be fighting in the Semi-finals, will keep you posted on the date.
HALLIWELL JONES DINNER SHOW
Saturday 29th March 07 Bridgefoot Police ABC had another action packed thirteen fight and dinner show, in aid of The Wooden Spoon Charity for under prevelaged young children in England and Ireland.
The boxing was started off with an action packed contest, between Bridgefoot hopeful Danny Craven and S Ball Bury ABC. Even though Danny gave age, weight and experience this was a very close contested contest with Danny taking the decision on points, Craven is getting better with every contest.
Jordan West who lost on points in the National Golden Gloves Final four days earlier was up against L Garnett Shildon ABC Durham.
Garnett is a very tall 40kg boxer who used his reach and moved well for a Southpaw, he had a very rangey backhand, which he kept catching Jordan with every time he threw it. The referee stopped the contest in the second round to Jordan's disappointment.
Sam Gifford was back in action, also another tall opponent in S.Al-meskery Cleckheaton ABC. Sam had a bad first round with Al-meskery taking a one sided first round, the second round started the same way, then half way through round 2, Sam started to start working and catching Al-meskery with one or two shots. In the last round Sam's fitness started to show when his opponent started to look tired.
Sam lost on points, but hopefully will learn from the contest.
Boxer of the night went to Michael Yuile who had another excellent contest with C Humphreys. After the first two rounds the contest was very close with both boxer matching each other, punch for punch. The last round Michael stepped up a gear and started to catch Humphreys with some good combinations to get the decision and also contest of the night.
Rhys Yates got back to winning ways with another close decision against S Marcelsanca Leigh ABC. Marcelsanca tried to pressure Yates and stay close inside to stop Yates used his boxing ability. In the last round Yates started to catch Marcelsanca with some tasty punches to take a points decision.
Also giving a good display of boxing ability was 18-year-old lightweight Jamie Lee. This was his second contest of the season, Jamie is a lovely mover with a lot of ability, he was up against Y Mahmood Phoenix Camp ABC. This was another good contest with the referee Carl Wall, commenting on how the contest was a pleasure to referee. Both boys boxed well, but Jamie was a class above his opponent to take another clear points decision.
Nathan Wheatley was up against another good boxer in Jamie Tollerton West Wirral ABC. Tollerton is a good boxer with more experience than Nathan, but he was a good test to see how Nathan could cope, Nathan had no problem with Tollerton, but lost a points decision.
The last contest of the night was between Bridgefoot Brian Garry and K Grievey Audley Police ABC.
This was a contest where both boxers were the same style with both boxers looking for a big back hand. The fight was fairly evenly contested with Grievey taking a points decision.
Other contests were:
N Snelson Phoenix ABC losing on points to T Walker Pool-of-Life.
S Brogan Skelmersdale ABC beat G Julio Caernarfon ABC
S Rice Dynamics ABC won on points vs A-Al-Meskry Cleckheaton ABC.
J Owen Dynamics ABC won on points vs A Brown Shildon ABC.
Prestecwyn Caernarfon ABC won on points vs J Sunderland Cleckheaton ABC.
JORDAN LOSES NATIONAL FINAL ON POINT
Sunday 25th March 2007 Jordan West lost on points in the National Golden Gloves final on. After beating two good opponents in the West Lanes & Cheshire Championships Jordan then got a bye to the National Finals, Jordan was up against George Veniss of Newham, ABC in class 3, under 40kgs class. Veniss was one nice tight boxer but the contest was not out of Jordan reach.
The first round was very close, but they were surprised when Jordan came back two points down. Round two was more or less the same, but at the end of the round the score four nil to Veniss, which surprised us! The last round Jordan had a lot to do to pull it back.
Both boys had a few tear-ups in the final round with Veniss turning away twice from West. Jordan has boxed a lot better and wasn't fully committed in the fight, which is a shame as if Jordan would of won he would have boxed for England in the Four Nations. But did not rise to the occasion.
By the way the final score was four nil to Veniss. Good win mate and good luck in the Four Nations.
From my point of view I sometimes fail to understand the way the judges score, you just think to yourself this is pathetic.
WEST LANCS/CHESHIRE JUNIOR ABA CHAMPIONSHIPS EVERTON PARK
Saturday 17th March 2007 Two Bridgefoot boxers started their campaign with Michael Williams getting a bye to the North West Countries, because of no opponent in the class 5, 46-48kg class.
First up was last years winner, Lee Ward. He was up against a novice boxer Carl Ventura of Marsh Lane ABC. Ventura only has six contest on his card, was completely outclassed. Give him his due he tried his best and gave everything he could. It must have been very hard for Ventura, knowing Lee's fight record and fighting four rounds, instead of three like he normally does. So when Ward hit him with two back hands in the second round, the referee called a halt to the contest. Never mind Carl you did well mate and good luck for the future. On the other hand it got Lee on the road hopefully to achieve the same as last year or even more.
In another four round contest was Tom Spicer class 6, 70kg. Tom was up against a boxer with 8 contest on his card.
Hart from Sefton ABC, Hart was another boxer who had a go, but was not in Tom's class, Tom boxed a good contest, all he needed was his long stiff left jab. He was good for Tom who was boxing his first, four round contest. People think it's only two more minutes, whats the problem? Well another round of boxing was no problem for Tom because of his fitness, which told in the fight. The last round Hart was shattered and had nothing in the tank, Tom won easily.
Good contest boys, Bring on the next round.
Sunday 11th March 2007 Bridgefoot ABC boxers weigh in for the Junior Championships, at Salisbury ABC. Bridgefoot weighed in 3 boxers.
Michael Williams 46-48kg Category, he was the only entry at this level so he got a walk over to the North West Counties Final, Everton Park 30th March 07.
Lee Ward 48-50kg category, Lee is boxing Saturday 17th March at Everton Park against K.Ventura Marsh Lane ABC. This is a four round contest for the West Lancashire and Cheshire Title.
Tom Spicer 68-70kg Category, Tom is boxing Saturday 17th March at Everton Park against K.Hart Sefton ABC. This is a four round contest for the West Lancashire and Cheshire Title.
If both boxers win they will join Michael Williams in the area Finals on 30th March 07.
9th March 2007 Bridgefoot Police boxer Danny Craven was up against D. Shields of Vauxhall Motors ABC. Danny was in devastating form against a strong boxer who easily thought he would have disposed of Danny. Shields had the shock of his life, from the first bell Danny was slipping shots, catching Shields with some head snapping counter shots. Shields began to get frustrated, because of Danny's work rate.
The last round saw Danny give Shields a standing count, with a perfectly placed left Jab. Shields didn't do himself any favours in a bout that Danny easily won, with an excellent display of boxing ability. WELL DONE DANNY!!
2nd March 07 Jessica Ward has her second bout of the season against Jessica Beedham, Hull Police ABC. From the outset Ward dominated the fight. Beedham was hungry for the fight but was unable to steer clear of Wards left right left shots. In the second round it seemed all Ward needed to do was to hit out with her Jab. The 3rd round came with Beedham coming out strong, Ward held her ground knocking Beedhams head back all the time with her Jab. The ref had to stop the fight while she cleaned up Beedhams nose, the fight then continued with much of the same. Ward won with a unanimous decision, in what was a good fight by both girls.
FEBURARY 07
10th February 2007 Danny Craven was in action against Michael McDonough Northside ABC. McDonough was a finalist in last year losing a very close decision; he was also Under 10 Golden Belt Champion.
McDonough had the shock of his life as Danny boxed another classic fight. Danny a novice of only 6 contests moved and boxed superbly, giving McDonough all sorts of problems. After the first round Danny was behind by 1 point. McDonough came out aggressive in the 2nd round, but could not catch Danny as he was moving around the ring making it difficult to connect any shots. After the 2nd round Danny was still behind by only 1 point. The last round was also very close, Danny did himself proud. The final score was 2 to 1 in favour of McDonough, which surprised McDonough.
Danny will be one to watch in the future.
Friday 2nd February 2007 The West Lancashire & Cheshire Golden Glove Championship continues at Everton Park, with the 2 West boys having their second contest in 4 days.
Declan was up against Jack Kinsella Salisbury ABC. This was another close fight, every time Declan came inside Kinsella held Declan and threw him around; we were surprised Kinsella was allowed to get away with these tactics. Give the boy his due he did as he was told by his corner. This unsettled Declan, Kinsella took a points decision.
Jordan was up against Kieran Smith, another boxer tipped for the title.
Jordan never once lost his composer, or let Smith counter punch. Jordan boxed a very clever bout slipping, blocking and countering Smith to take a one sided victory.
Jordan has beaten 2 very good opponents to win the West Lancashire & Cheshire title. He has a bye into the quarter finals which will be staged on the 24th February 2007 in Aldershot.
JANUARY 07
30th January 2007 Bridgefoot brothers Declan and Jordan began there campaign in the Golden Glove Championships.
Their first preliminary contests were held at the Dockers Club Liverpool.
Declan was up against James Ferguson Kirby ABC. It was an even contest with both boxers having the same record. Declan was on fire, the ref had to stop the fight in the first round as James was feeling sick after being hit with some excellent body shots.
Jordan was up against Craig Johnson Tower Hill ABC, he was a former Schoolboy Champion with 14 wins in 16 fights as a record.
Another excellent fight with both boxers not giving an inch, Johnson is an excellent mover, never standing still for a moment. Jordan stayed with him every step of the way; he caught Johnson with some excellent shots, giving him a well deserved point's decision. What a start for Jordan to knock out one of the favourites for the title.
BRIDGEFOOT ABC WEIGH IN FOR THE GOLDEN GLOVES CHAMPIONSHIP
Sunday 28th January 2007 Declan West, Jordan West and Danny Craven weigh in.
Declan in the 34-36kg Category 1994
Jordan in the 38-40kg Category 1992
Danny in the 46-48kg Category 1993. Danny got a bye, as there was no one in his weight category to fight in the West Lancashire area. He walked straight into the Northwest Counties Final.
JESSICA WARD LOSES TO A CONTRAVERSIAL DECISION
27th January 2007 Bridgefoot's youngest female boxer, Jessica Ward age 12 made a 500 mile round trip for her first contest. Both her parents and coaches Amanda and Derek Groarke also made the long trip to Harwich ABC Essex.
Jessica lost on a point's decision to local girl Rachel Wheatley, to the utter surprise of most people watching the fight. So many coaches from other clubs commented on the fact that Jessica won the fight; we just could not believe the decision. But that is what you are up against. When the decision was announced both Amanda and Derek thought that the judges had the score cards mixed up, to say we were flabbergasted is an under statement. The fight was excellent especially for 2 first timers, Rachael was up for the fight but every time she stepped forward, Jessica knocked her head back with her left jab she also landed some nice body shots.
22nd Jan 2007 Bridgefoot boxers Danny Hodge and Nathan Wheatley were both back in action after the Christmas break. Travelling to St George ABC Nottingham.
15 Year old Heavyweight Danny Hodge was first up in his 3rd contest of the season. He was up against a very tall and rangy Y. Siabdellam of Radford ABC. Danny lost the fight on a point's decision, but also ruptured his right Bicep, which I have never known to happen before. Danny will be out of action for the next 2 months.
Nathan Wheatley was up next against C.R.Hardy St George ABC. This was Nathan's first senior fight; he gave Hardy a standing count with the first punch of the contest. Hardy never really recovered from that punch, so when Hardy took a second count, the ref stopped the fight in the first round.
DECEMBER 06
December 14th 06. Catherine Davies had her first Kid Gloves contest at the Sefton Show. Kid Gloves is where there is no winner or loser, so there is no pressure of winning. Kid Gloves are very good for experience
Catherine boxed Sarah Conley from Sefton. Both Girls gave a good account of themselves. Catherine got a taste for boxing, and cannot wait for her next contest.
NOVEMBER 06
DANNY CRAVEN WINS BEST BOXER AWARD
Friday 24th November. Two Bridgefoot Police ABC boxers were in action, as part of the North West Counties select team, against a Guernsey & Auldeny squad in Guernsey itself. Danny Craven was first up against a much taller A. Baker of Guernsey ABC. Craven had to work extremely hard to get inside Bakers very long reach advantage, but lost a very close contest. The contest was given the contest of the night award, so both boxers received another trophy for a very exciting and competitive bout. Nice one Danny!!
Next up was new Bridgefoot Police boxer Danny Hodge 15; he was up against Light Heavyweight A. Mayers from Guernsey ABC. Danny boxed really well using his ability and the whole of the ring, to not get involved in toe to toe fight. He won on a unanimous decision. This is Danny's first season as a carded boxer, he has had 2 fights both won on points, the hardest thing is getting contests for light heavyweights especially at his age.
I and both of the boxers would like to thank Steve Warsaaw of Centurions ABC for looking after them and hopefully this will be the first of many trips away.
Bridgefoot Police ABC clean up at Leigh show
Friday 24th November Bridgefoot Police ABC travelled away from there home town of Warrington on Friday evening with four boxers who were going to represent the club on Leigh ABC's boxing show. All the boxers arrived nice an early for the formalities of the weigh-in and the doctors medical checks. All four boxers eased through the formalities with no problems. It was then just a waiting game for the O i/c of the evening to sort the bouts out.
The first contest of the evening and the first boxer up for Bridgefoot ABC was a school Boy contest between our very own Declan West and his opponent Ryan Birch (Darnhill ABC). From the start it was clear that Birch had a superior height advantage on West. The bell went for the first round and young Declan set about his job of unsettling his opponent. His work rate, movement and accuracy of shots in the first round clearly gave him the advantage moving into the second round. The second round proved a little tougher for Declan, but that just seemed to fire him up even more, during this round both boxers connected with some good shots, but again Declan had the edge in that round. The third round started with a BIG right hander from Declan which landed right on the button and showed his opponent his intentions for the remainder of the bout. Again in this round Declan chose his shots well and was a constant threat with his right hand. The room stood to applauded what was fantastic opening bout to the show. Declan West beat Ryan Birch on a Unanimous point decision.
The second boxer for Bridgefoot ABC was Nathan Wheatley; his opponent on the evening was Mark Cameron (Sefton ABC) this was a junior contest. During the warm-up Nathan was in a relaxed but confident mood. After all the formalities of the introductions by the MC it was clear to see that Nathan was fully focused on the contest, the bell rang for the first round to commence. Nathan wasted no time with getting into the action, his relaxed demeanour showed as he selected his shot, which were all hitting his opponent in the target area. Good movment, work rate and the fact he used his head during the first round put him ahead. The start of the second round un-eased Nathan at first as his opponent came out at a much higher tempo. After several good exchanges between both boxers it was the clear that young Wheatley was to strong for Cameron, half way through the second round after an excellent flurry of shots the referee sent Nathan to the neutral corner whilst he administered a standing eight count to his opponent. It was at this point the referee stopped the contest in favour of Nathan Wheatley.
After some time waiting it was the turn of the senior boxers. The third boxer of the evening for Bridgefoot ABC was Brian Garry and his opponent for this contest was Richard Applegate (Bury ABC). This bout was only the second contest for Brian Garry. During his warm-up prior to the contest Brian was just beginning to get anxious which is a very good sign for an inexperienced boxer, as his thoughts are fully on the job in hand. Brian is a muscular, very powerful looking south paw boxer who was keen to get started. The bell rang for the first round both boxers met in the middle and traded some good shots; it wasn't long before the powerful shots of the awkward south-paw Garry were having the more success. Brian was now very relaxed, his movement and range of shots were excellent for such an inexperienced boxer. He was leading the bout going into the second round; again both boxers traded good shots at each other during the second round, but Brian may have just edged it with more accurate scoring shots. In the third round both boxers were very tired, due to the amount of work both boxers had put in to this point. Richard Applegate came on stronger in the last round. Again it was a excellent display of boxing skills and courage from two inexperienced boxers which was very well received by the crowd.
Brian Garry beat Richard Applegate on a points decision.
The last boxer of the evening for Bridgefoot ABC was the experienced Danny Potter and his opponent for the contest was Chris Goodwin (Broughton ABC). Danny is a seasoned senior boxer and is a credit to any boxing club, the relaxed attitude he has knowing he will have a long wait before he box's is an example for any young boxers to aspire to. Once all the formalities were done, the boxing begun. South-paw Danny Potter made all the first moves to gain control of the centre of the ring. The first round was like a game of chess; both boxers were trying to find the point of attack. Danny came out for the second round ahead, but Chris Goodwin wasn't going to make it an easy night for Potter. After a further two rounds of hard hitting but very tactical boxing the bout came to an end. Danny Potter beat Chris Goodwin on a points decision.
I would just like to take his opportunity to congratulate all four boxers on there well deserved victory's and more importantly the way they conducted themselves during the evening. Well done you are all a credit to Bridgefoot Police ABC.
17th November 2006 Bridgefoot Police ABC staged its first show of the season. Staged at the Halliwell Jones, on behalf of the Mike Wainwright testimonial fund. After the meal Bridgefoot Police ABC provided 10 excellent contests.
Fight of the night went to Bridgefoot boxer Mark Buckley; he was fighting J. Forrester from Sale West ABC. This action packed contest was full of sheer will power and guts. Both of the fighters giving 110%, Buckley lost on a point's decision,
he was still awarded fight of the night by the ABA OIC John Smurthwaite.
First up for Bridgefoot was Declan West who fought D. Booth from Hulton Abbey ABC. Declan boxed well against a taller opponent to take a unanimous decision.
Jordan West was up against T. Hallimond for Shildon ABC, this was another action packed bout, which Jordan lost on a point's decision.
Danny Craven was up against C. Garaghty from Hyton ABC. He was another tall opponent, it was a very close contest but Danny lost on a split decision, the decision in my view was a little contentious. Danny lost the first round because of Garaghty's reach advantage, but in my opinion Danny won the next 2 rounds.
Adam Gifford was up against B. Woods from Sale West ABC. Adam lost the first round but started to pick up his pace in the second, then he got hit with 2 back hand shots. The referee stopped the fight in favour of Woods. Hard luck Adam!
Rhys Yates was up next against P.Gavin from Preston & Fullwood ABC. Rhys is normally a very good boxer, but for some unknown reason he tried to knock his opponent out. Rhys was well ahead on all 3 score cards but ducked straight onto a right hook come uppercut in the last round, to his opponents surprise. Gavin won with a last round K.O.
Tom Spicer junior welterweight was up against Michael Binsfield from Caernarfon ABC. Spicer was very busy showing good reach and range, against a very slippery counter puncher.
Both fighters are 1 contest each, thanks for coming all the way from Caernarfon.
Danny Potter was in action, in what will be his final season , due to retirement age. He was against B. Creighton from Knowsley Vale ABC. Creighton won the fight after 4 very close rounds, in another contest that could have been fight of the night.
Phil Syers Bridgefoot Heavyweight was back in action after 12 months absence, he was against M. Dean from Darnhill & Haywood ABC. Both lads gave it all with Syers losing yet another close decision.
David Maher had the final contest against C. Read from Hulton Abbey ABC. Read won a unanimous points decision.
It was a great night of boxing which helped to raise a substantial amount of money for the Mike Wainwright Testimonial Fund. Bridgefoot ABC has already been approached by Warrington Wolves Super league captain Lee Briars for his Testimonial season next year.
SEPTEMBER 06
25 Sept 06. Bridgefoot Police ABC boxer Jamie Lee 17, was in action with our first fight of the season at the 3D Theatre Bolton. He was up against Duane Rogers from Sharples Police ABC. Jamie had to work hard to get inside Rogers very long reach advantage. Jamie won the first round. Then let Rogers start to come into the contest in round 2. It was an extremely close contest, which Jamie won on points at the end.
Jamie was sporting Bridgefoots new boxing kit, which was sponsored by the Army who donated £500.00 towards the cost of Kits for all carded boxers. The sponsorship was arranged by a new member of the boxing coach team Mike Rutherford, who is an Army sergeant in the Warrington recruitment office. Thanks Mike!!
We would also like to thank Suzi Wong for making our new kits and her daughter Melissa. Suzi Wong designs kits for all the top boxers, Ricky Hatton, Amer Khan and many more. We have a link to her website on our homepage.
We would also like to thank Jason Ward for all his hard work keeping this site up to date, he does a superb job, and is always accurate with what he does. Cheers Jay!!
