F.A.Q

Q:  I  have never boxed before what do I need to know?

A:  If you have never boxed before it is advisable to take a couple of private classes with one of our instructors. The instructor will take you through a warm up before teaching you how to move, attack and defend with the correct form. During these sessions you will be taught using focus pads and the various bags. This one-on-one teaching will provide the fastest results and ensure you have the correct technique.  Private classes can then be continued if you wish or you can move to a group class or simply train on your own.

Q:  What equipment will I need?

A:  The usual gym attire.  You will also need a pair of boxing gloves, a jump rope and a towel.  Hand wraps are advisable to reduce hand damage.  Boxing gloves and jump ropes can be borrowed from the gym however, we advise anyone that becomes seriously interested in the sport to purchase boxing gloves and hand wraps from our shop.

Q:  How fit do I need to be to start training and how often do I need to train?

A:  If you have not taken part in any sport ot fitness training before or have been sedentary for a long time it is advisable to see a doctor before undertaking any exercise program.  With that exception boxing can be enjoyed at any level of fitness.  As with any exercise program you're returns are only limited by the effort you put in, as a general rule three sessions a week should get you and keep you fit.

Q:  Will I have to take part in contests or spar?

A:  No, not unless you want to.  If you are using boxing for fitness training then bag work and focus pads will be sufficient.  If you want to spar the instructors will indentify an appropriate opponent for you or you can consider becoming an amatuer boxer and take part in the organised Bridgefoot ABC events.

Q:  My friends and I would like to train with an instructor, can we do this?

A:  Yes but we will not allow any more than three people to share a class and we also reserve the right to refuse the group at any time.

Q:  What about boxing for women?

A:  We have an experienced and fully ABAE qualified female instructor who takes ladies for individual and group instruction.  The group classes have a particularly good attendance with ladies of all ages.  Private ladies classes are also provided and are proving popular.

Q:  I want to become an amatuer boxer how do I do this?

A:  In the first instance let our instructors know.  Hook & Jab run a strong amatuer team, Bridgefoot ABC, who are part of the Amatuer Boxing Association of England. The amatuer team meet weekly to train and take part in numerous events throughout the boxing season.
